Office of the Public Guardian

A government department that protects people in England and Wales who may not have the mental capacity to make certain decisions for themselves, such as about health and finance.

Open market value

The value that an asset would expect to realise if sold on the open market. This is the value that professional valuers give when valuing assets for the estate.

Outright gift

A gift which passes completely to the recipient, so that they can do with it exactly as they wish. The other usual way of making a gift, where the recipient does not have complete control of it, is a gift in trust.
